Assignments :
Regular homework will be assigned, graded, and returned. Quizzes
may pop up at any time, especially when you have been asked to "read
the next chapter" (or half of it, perhaps).
Exams will be based largely on homework problems,
and on material discussed in class.
Grading : 25% for homework, quizzes, class participation;
25% for each of two midterms;
25% for final exam.
Late homework will not be accepted; the lowest homework score will be
discarded.
Midterm exams will be scheduled roughly 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through
the quarter.

- Classification of solids: ionic, covalent, metallic, ...
- Periodicity. Crystal structures. Reciprocal latices.
- Vibrational properties of crystals.
- Behavior of electrons in crystals. Bands, Fermi surfaces. Excitations.
- Thermal behavior of insulating and metallic solids.
- Dielectric theory; optical properties.
- Magnetism in solids: diamagnetism, paramagnetism, ...
- Magnetic ordering: ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism.
- Superconductivity.
