The Division of Statistics expects that there would be many opportunities
for collaboration and joint ventures in teaching and research involving the
Division and a formally organized group in CS&E.
Our recently submitted plan for the further development of
Computational and Graphical Statistics calls for the addition of five new
faculty positions over the next seven years. We envision at least two of
these positions being allocated to joint appointments with other units. We
believe that an affiliation with CS&E would be among the more likely
possibilities, and we would welcome the opportunity to plan a joint search
with CS&E if and when the Initiative is authorized.
The mention of
potential joint Target-of-Excellence hires is also very appealing.
Individuals that come to mind would include Colin Mallows and Daryl
Pregibon from AT&T, Y. Vardi from Rutgers, and D. Nychka of North Carolina
State. All four are world-class researchers with strong profiles in
computational aspects of Statistics, and each would have, we believe, the
seniority and record of accomplishment that would qualify them for a
targeted recruitment. Finally, with regard to academic institutions
currently producing new PhDs with strength on the interface of Statistics
and Computational Science, we would mention U. Washington, U. Chicago,
Stanford U., and Carnegie Mellon.
